The productivity gains from AI-assisted development are real. Engineering teams using these tools are moving meaningfully faster, and that advantage compounds over time. But speed without the right foundations does not produce better outcomes. It produces more output, faster, with risk accumulating in ways that are not always visible until something goes wrong.
This is the tension at the centre of AI-native delivery, and every organisation adopting these tools needs to understand it clearly.
Why the Risk Is Hard to See
AI-generated code looks right. It is fluent, it follows conventions and it structures itself in ways that are familiar to any engineer doing a review. That surface plausibility is part of what makes AI tooling valuable. It is also what makes it easy to miss problems:

- Clear code ownership so engineers understand and stand behind what they ship
- Security review embedded in the delivery process rather than added at the end
- Observability in production so teams know when something is not behaving as expected
- Deliberate attention to how sensitive data flows through AI-assisted systems
These are not new practices. They are the engineering fundamentals that have always distinguished teams that deliver well from teams that just deliver. What AI changes is the stakes. When implementation accelerates, the cost of weak foundations accelerates with it.
The Specific Risks Worth Naming
Two areas deserve particular attention:
Security. AI models generate patterns they have seen in training data, including insecure ones. Without explicit attention to security in both the prompting and review process, AI-assisted development can introduce vulnerabilities that would not survive careful manual implementation.
Compliance and data handling. Systems built quickly, without deliberate attention to how sensitive information flows through them, can create governance problems that are expensive to unpick later. Speed does not suspend regulatory obligations.
The Bottom Line
None of this means organisations should slow down adoption. It means being honest about what the preconditions for safe adoption look like, and investing in them accordingly.
